La ciudad de Nueva York está situada en la costa Este de Estados Unidos de Norteamérica, bañado por el Océano Atlántico en el que desemboca el río Hudson que atraviesa todo el estado. Limita al Oeste con New Jersey, al Noroeste con Connecticut y al Sureste con Long Island. La ciudad da nombre al estado cuya capital es Albany.
Hasta 1898 la ciudad estaba formada únicamente por Manhattan a la que se le unieron ese mismo año los condados de Kings (Brooklyn), Queens, Bronx y Richmond (Staten Island).
